Meet the Chef: Maile of From Mai’s Shack specializing in Island Food

Can you share a bit about your business and what you do?

From Mai’s Shack sells my take on island food.

When and why did you decide to start your new business?

I started my business a little after COVID hit. I was laid off from my job, and unemployment just wasn’t making ends meet.

What do you love most about running your own business?

I love running my own business because I can choose what I want to sell and when I want to sell. I’m my own boss!

What’s your #1 recommendation for someone who has yet to try out your menu? 

I would recommend my Mochiko chicken, but most recently, my favorite right now is the Shmack Box (Teriyaki burger with grilled pineapple and Furikake fries).

Do you have a business goal you can’t wait to hit either this year or in the future?

A pretty big goal of mine for 2021 is to be involved in more pop-up events and continue to support other small businesses in the East Bay.
